Your metabolism is the key to converting food into energy. Your metabolism is what burns off calories and the faster you burn these calories the quicker you lose weight.
We use this energy burning 60 - 70% of the calories for normal daily functions which is our resting metabolic rate (also called the basal metabolic rate). The remaining 30% is used in exercise and physical activities with roughly 10% of the caloric energy used in processing and digesting food (known as the thermic effect)
So, how do you boost your metabolism?

Doing cardio and/or weight training activity 3 to 5 times a week will elevate your metabolism for hours even after you've finished exercising. The best time is in the morning, that way you kick start the metabolism for the day.
For every 1 pound of muscle you pack on to your body, you burn about an extra 50 calories per day all without any additional effort on your part.
- Eat a good breakfast every day. Don't skip. When you are sleeping your metabolism slows, so eating a lite breakfast in the morning sends the message to kick start your metabolism. Without breakfast your body goes into starvation mode by slowing down its metabolic rate and not burning calories. This fasting, survival mode of metabolism you do not want if you are trying to lose weight.
- Eat smaller meals and have more of these smaller meals. Eating 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day will keep your metabolic rate high since you are keeping the thermo effect talked about earlier going. The more often you eat, the more often your metabolic rate is jacked into gear. Don't eat late at night since your body doesn't have a chance to burn up what is in the oven. Your last meal should be a lite meal.
- Eat at least 1,200 worth of calories a day. The average person needs 1,200 calories to keep their basal rate going. You need to eat at least that much to keep from having your metabolism slow down
- Eating more lean protein like chicken and fish makes for burning more calories. It takes more energy to digest protein than carbohydrates or fat.
- Foods with a lot of fibre such as fruits and vegetables as well as beans, whole grains take longer to digest and help burn more calories.
- Drink plenty of water or tea beverages a day. The energy burning process needs water to process your metabolic needs efficiently.
